Things to Keep in Mind Before Visiting a Veterinarian

Veterinarians, who are considered to be an essential asset of pet health care are responsible for taking care of the health and well-being of animals. They diagnose, treat and help animals stay healthy. Pet owners are concerned about taking their pets to the vets only when they are sick. Ideally routine vet visits are recommended for your pet's overall well-being. Vising a vet at regular intervals shall determine your pet’s health progress and also identify any underlying conditions that the animal may be afflicted with at a later stage.

Visiting a vet can be a stressful affair, both for you as well as your pet. To get the best care possible and to make your visit effective, make sure that you are prepared well in advance with the list of do’s and don’ts before you plan your visit. Here are a few tips that you may follow before visiting a veterinarian.

Visiting a Veterinarian
1. Schedule an appointment at a convenient time: Just a regular checkup can be a good reason for planning a visit to the vet. Fixing up a prior appointment shall keep him in the loop about your arrival. If you have anything else to discuss apart from the routine inspection, it is better to let the receptionist know beforehand so that you get a good amount of time. It shall also be a good idea to give a brief indication about the problem that the animal is facing and enquire whether you need to get a urine or stool sample or do anything else in particular before the examination.

2. Keep a note about your pet’s condition: You should always take notice and observe if anything is bothering your pet, no matter how trivial the issue maybe. Problems such as vomiting, making strange noises, biting a particular area of the body, decreased appetite etc. should never be neglected. Be careful enough to note down the exact symptoms, duration of the problem and any particular reactions that you have seen in your pet.

3. Make a list of questions for the vet:
If you want your visit to be quick, smooth and hassle-free, prepare a list of questions on your pet’s condition in advance. The queries may range from a variety of issues like diet, weight and vaccinations to health concerns and care tips. Make it a point to ask questions on every visit as the answers may change depending on the age of your pet.

4. Make your pet comfortable and secure: Your pet may feel anxious or uncomfortable in new surroundings. Get its favorite blanket or some chewy treats so as to make it feel at home. Large-sized dogs should be in leashes and small pets carefully tucked in carriers; throw in a few toys that he likes so that your pet is comfortable with the idea of going into it.

5. Get a copy of your pet’s medical records: Keeping a track of your pet’s medical records is definitely essential, especially if you are visiting the vet for the first time as it shall help the doctor learn a little more about the animal before treating it. This may include the medical treatments, surgeries, blood tests, hospital visits or vaccination history. With the copies at your side, you are also spared from remembering every minute detail that you may need to consult with the vet.

6. Know about the finances: Owning a pet is easy, but catering to its needs is expensive indeed, especially if it requires any additional medical treatment. Make it a point to have a frank discussion with the vet if you wish to explore the various treatment options, based on your budget. You may have the option to opt for cheaper procedures or pay huge bills in installments. So choose accordingly!

Getting your furry, scaly or slimy friend to a veterinarian for a health and wellness checkup can be a nerve-wracking experience. But with the above mentioned tips, it should be an easy affair, rather than a cause of concern for both you and your pet.
