6 lifestyle habits Cardiologists follow to protect their own heart

"Take care of your HEART don't let it fall apart"

Good Nutrition is essential to have a healthy heart. Unfortunately, as individuals we often ignore to eat well – and hence fail to take care of our heart. A recent study shows that Heart Disease is the biggest killer across the globe - more than all types of cancers taken together. Every year nearly 610,000 Americans die from heart diseases. One can do a lot to lower the odds of getting heart disease, just by taking action. So here are few healthy lifestyle habits, Cardiology Doctors recommend and often follow to get their own hearts on track.

1. Avoid tobacco products: As per research, in the USA about 20% of all deaths from heart disease are directly related to the use of tobacco products. Cardiologists say that smoking is the major cause of coronary artery disease. Not only smoking, exposing one’s self to second-hand smoking also increases the chance of having heart diseases. Cardiologists therefore recommend saying a firm "NO" to tobacco products.

2. Monitor cholesterol: Cardiologists opine that if your cholesterol level is more than 200 you are likely to get heart disease. The following levels of cholesterol are also few of the causes for heart disease,
HDL (High-density lipoprotein) Cholesterol level under 40
LDL (Low-density lipoprotein) Cholesterol level over 160
             Triglycerides over 150
For people who have family history of high-cholesterol, it is necessary to have frequent check-ups with Physicians to avoid drug therapy.  Sometimes certified and practicing Doctors also prescribe diet therapy if cholesterol ratio is high, but diet can only decrease total blood cholesterol by about 10%.

3. Eating healthy: For those patients who take the diet way, visiting a Registered Dietician is the path to managing heart problems. The food we intake can decrease the risk of various heart diseases. One should be very careful while choosing food and a healthy diet plan should include vegetables, fruits, seafood, whole grains, legumes, nonfat dairy, nuts, processed meats, moderate in alcohol, refined grains, low in sugar-sweetened foods and drinks. It is advised to drink slim milk, less coffee and more herbal tea.

4. Make exercise a daily routine: Staying physically active for at least 2.5 hours at moderate intensity exercise per week or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity exercise each week can improve blood circulation to heart. Research says that obesity epidemic continues in Americans due to lack of exercise. Exercises not only burn calories but it does more - it also activates hormones that are beneficial to health in other ways. It is the best treatment for anxiety and depression. Exercise alone won't help in reducing the weight you should also modify your diet – hence helping to keep the condition of the heart in check.

5. Good night sleep: Sleeping for 7 to 8 hours contributes to lower heart disease. Poor sleep that is less than seven hours is directly linked to higher blood pressure, which is the main risk factor for heart disease.

6. Staying hydrated: Daily intake of water of five or more glasses can lower the risk of heart disease, as dehydration is linked with increased hematocrit and increased blood viscosity which is further associated with cardiovascular events. A study shows that increase in water intake improves your overall diet.

It is well said that "Prevention is better than cure" - it is better to learn how to lower the risk of heart disease and follow them effectively and stay healthy. Results show that people who have been following these above lifestyle habits has 86% lower risk of heart attack than those who didn’t. If you include these 6 lifestyle habits in your daily routine, you can easily lead to a significant reduction in death from heart disease.
After all, unless you are completely enthusiastic about visiting Cardiologists – they too recommend you to follow these habits.
