7 Signs to visit an Urologist for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH is a noncancerous increase in the size of the prostate. As the prostate enlarges it squeeze down on urethra making the bladder walls thicker. In course of time, the bladder may weaken and lose its ability to empty completely causing problems like Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. Though there are fewer signs of BPH occurring in men below 40 years (it is mostly seen in people between 51-60), it is recommended that men start visiting Urologists post 40 years especially if they have any of the common signs and symptoms of BPH.

7 Signs and Symptoms of BPH

Difficulty in starting urination: As the prostate enlarges it makes the bladder walls thicker, and messes with the pressure of the bladder to pass urine comfortably. This may also lead to kidney problems such as kidney stones etc., in which case, consulting a nephrologist may be necessary.

Urgent need to urinate: Urinating 8 or more times a day is defined as Nocturia and it is common in men with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. One feels like urinating frequently especially at night. It is because the increase prostate puts more pressure on urethra and bladder making it difficult to hold in urine.

Pain during urination or ejaculation: Enlarged prostate will put pressure on the reproductive system and urinary tract resulting in pain during urination or ejaculation. Pain may sometimes occur due to infection, which is almost a common complication in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.

Urinary retention: Also known as Ischuria it is the inability to empty the bladder completely. If one is unable to pass urine it is recommended to make an immediate appointment with your Urologist so that they can drain the urine using the catheter.

Urinary tract infections (UTI): Infections occur due to bacteria which grow in the bladder due to inability to fully empty the urine from the bladder. UTIs can occur in both men and women.

Bladder stones: These stones occur mainly due to the inability to empty the bladder and it is one of the symptoms of BPH. Bladder stones cause severe infections, bladder irritation, blood in the urine and blockage of urine flow.

Urine with blood: Also known as Hematuria. It can occur as a result of the dilated veins on the surface of an enlarged prostate gland.
